Garry Kasparov does not O.K. of the double bongcloud: 'I'm old intentional'

Earlier this year, at the Meltwater Champions Chess Duty tou, new chess world champion Magnus Carlsen and grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura had a dead rubber match: both players needed a draw to qualify. Rather than pursuing traditional methods of drawing a match, both players distinct to lean into the memes away performin an opening dubbed the Stunt man Bongcloud.

I think the world wants to get a line something, to be entertained. And these kinda draws are non are not sending the right substance.

At that place are various explanations for where the Bongcloud nomenclature came from, but it's been around since at least the '90s and seems inextricable from the rise of internet chess. There were rumours that former existence genius Bobby Robert James Fischer played online in the '90s, and would use this opening to demonstrate his superiority (thanks, Guardian). Arsenic that suggests, the joke with the Bongcloud is that it's such a bad move you'd have to be intoxicated out of your mind to even stress information technology.

At the time, grandmaster Nigel Short was somewhat disapproving of the play. PC Gamer recently interviewed former globe star Garry Kasparov World Health Organization, among his many achievements, mentored the young Magnus Carlsen. I asked Kasparov about this omissible, and whether he considered it disrespectful.

"I can tell you, I would have never done that," laughs Kasparov. "So as for me, it's wrong because I'm old fashioned. You know, I grew up in the Soviet Union. So 40 old age ago in 1978 was the first gear time I dependant for the Soviet national championship, and I believe that when you attend the present, you take in to perform, an actor, so you have to be dressed. End-to-end my pro career almost of the games I played, I had a collar and railroad tie.

"It's because it's not just my plot. I play it in figurehead of the public and I think respecting the public is important. I think the state-supported wants to imag something, to equal amused. And these kinda draws are not are non sending the right message."

The memes excursus, however, the double bongcloud did perhaps demonstrate a more fundamental trouble: a format that puts cardinal competitors in a situation where a haul is the most desirable event.

"I empathise this draw demonstrated the imperfectness of the system on Magnus' chess," says Kasparov, "because you have these endless marathons and information technology's each about winning at the end. And this game had no value for two players, they risk or they could both characterize: I understand their professional inclinations to make this kind of draw.

"We had these debates in football, for example, when during qualifiers both teams needed draws to qualify, and sometimes these matches were very painful to ascertain. So, over again, I'd wishing to improve that. But I think that if you meet cheat for the public, especially for the internet public, you're non talking about a couple up of hundred people in the audience, merely you're talking about maybe a copulate cardinal people. I mean you should pay utmost respect to your viewers."
